How to write R in cursive

These steps follow the traditional school letters shown above. Other handwriting systems may form R differently, so stay consistent with the style you are learning.

Capital R in cursive

  1. Begin with a small hook at the top left and pull a straight stem down to the baseline.
  2. Return to the top and sweep right around the bowl, back toward the stem at the midline.
  3. Kick the leg out to the baseline and finish with a small curl.

Lowercase r in cursive

  1. Slant up from the baseline to the midline.
  2. Make a small shoulder to the right, staying at the midline.
  3. Come down to the baseline and curve into the exit stroke.

Common mistakes with cursive R

  • Rounding the shoulder into a hump, which makes lowercase r look like n.
  • Making the shoulder too high, so r towers over the letters beside it.
  • Drawing a printed r, which leaves nothing to join to the next letter.
