How to write A in cursive

These steps follow the traditional school letters shown above. Other handwriting systems may form A differently, so stay consistent with the style you are learning.

Capital A in cursive

  1. Start near the top line and curve left and down into a large oval that rests on the baseline.
  2. Curve back up to the top line so the oval closes at the top right.
  3. Pull a slanted stroke down the right side and finish with a short exit curve on the baseline.

Lowercase a in cursive

  1. Start at the midline and curve left and down into a small oval.
  2. Close the oval back at the midline without leaving a gap.
  3. Retrace down the right side to the baseline and curve up into the exit stroke.

Common mistakes with cursive A

  • Writing a printed capital A with a pointed top instead of the rounded cursive oval.
  • Leaving the top of the lowercase oval open, which makes a look like u.
  • Skipping the retrace on the right side, so the stem looks detached from the oval.
