How to write I in cursive

These steps follow the traditional school letters shown above. Other handwriting systems may form I differently, so stay consistent with the style you are learning.

Capital I in cursive

  1. Start at the left near the midline and curve along the baseline to form the hooked base.
  2. Rise on a long curve to the top line and round over the top.
  3. Come back down the slant, meeting the base near the baseline to close the shape.

Lowercase i in cursive

  1. Slant up from the baseline to the midline.
  2. Retrace down to the baseline and curve up into the exit stroke.
  3. Finish the word first, then come back and place the dot above the letter.

Common mistakes with cursive I

  • Writing a straight printed capital I, which removes the cursive loop entirely.
  • Confusing capital I with capital J; only J continues below the baseline.
  • Lifting the pen for the dot in the middle of a word and breaking the rhythm.
